Enemies, Part 2

 Bible Reading: Luke 6:20-35

Key Verse: Verses Luke 6:27 & 35 - “But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,” (vs. 27)  “But love ye your enemies,  and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” (vs. 35)

Key Words: Love your enemies

The word enemies means “those that oppose you, your adversaries.”

Certainly, David had an adversary in Absalom, yet when Absalom died at the hand of Joab, we read in II Samuel 19:4 that after David heard of Absalom’s death, he cried, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!” Is there any doubt that David loved Absalom?

Mary Marty retells a parable from the Eye of the Needle newsletter. A holy man was engaged in his morning meditation under a tree whose roots stretched out over the riverbank. During his meditation, he noticed that the river was rising, and a scorpion caught in the roots was about to drown. He crawled out on the roots and reached down to free the scorpion, but every time he did so, the scorpion struck back at him. An observer came along and said to the holy man, “Don’t you know that’s a scorpion, and it’s in the nature of the scorpion to want to sting?” To which the holy man replied, “That may well be, but it is my nature to save, and must I change my nature because the scorpion does not change its nature?”

Don’t let your enemies control your actions and your attitude. Love them and be controlled by the spirit of God.

What to do:

Remember, it’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice (even to your enemies).
