Bible Reading: Acts 4:1-12
Key Verse: Verse 12 – “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
Key Words: none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved
Monopoly is probably the best known, most popular board game of all time – but there’s a great deal of dispute over how the game actually came about. The “official” story is that unemployed salesman Charles Darrow sketched the original version on a piece of oilcloth and sold the game’s rights to Parker Brothers in 1935.
Another version of Monopoly’s history says Elizabeth J. Magie patented, in 1904, a game called The Landlord Game, to portray the evils of real estate monopolies. Then, in 1929, a teacher in the Atlantic City Friends School introduced the game (which by then went by the name of “Monopoly”) to her colleagues and students. They gave the spaces familiar Atlantic City names, assigned property values, and painted the playing board as it is known today.
A visitor took the game back to Philadelphia and introduced it to a Quaker hotel manager named Charles Todd, who in turn introduced the game to Darrow. “He asked me to write up the rules and make him some copies and copy the board game for him,” says Todd. Todd pointed out that, in copying the game for Darrow, he had misspelled “Marven Gardens” as “Marvin Gardens.” The spelling error still persists.
While we may not know from where Monopoly came, we do know from where salvation comes: John 3:16, 36; Romans 5:8, 8:32; I John 4:9 (just to name a few of the verses that tell us where we can find salvation and how we can be saved).
What to do:
✞ Remember, salvation is not a game. It is serious business.
