Over-Indulging

Bible Reading: Proverbs 23:1-9

Key Verse: Verse 2 - “And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.”

Key Words: if thou be a man given to appetite

Very simply stated, we are not to make pigs of ourselves.

In our day when people do often over-indulge, not because they are hungry, but they do so because of tension or stress!  Just as our dress should be modest and in moderation, so should our eating habits.

According to “Strange Stories” contained in The Readers Digest, “Daniel Boone achieved worldwide fame as the quintessential frontier man.  Boone never wore a coonskin, preferring the broad-brimmed beaver hat that was a family tradition.  As for his demise, it wasn’t the great outdoors that did him in.  In 1820, at the age of 85, it seems he overindulged in one of his favorite dishes, baked sweet potatoes, and died of indigestion.  Boone was laid to rest in Missouri beside his wife, Rebecca.  In 1845, Kentucky reclaimed its famous son, and their bodies were reburied there.  Modern research suggests, however, that the grave next to Rebecca’s may contain the remains of a slave originally buried beside her, and that Boone still rests on a scenic hilltop in Missouri.”

We can learn a lot from Daniel Boone, and one of those things is don’t overindulge.
