Bible Reading: Mark 10:13-22
Key Verse: Verse 22 – “And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.”
Key Words: for he had great possessions
As you read the story of this rich young ruler, a number of things stand out.
First of all, he was humble. Verse 17 tells us he kneeled before Jesus.
Secondly, he was desirous of eternal life (verse 17).
Thirdly, he obeyed the Lord (verses 18-20).
Fourthly, he was wealthy. Verse 22 tells us he had great possessions.
I have been re-reading the record of the rich young ruler and his obviously wrong choice. But it has set me thinking. No matter how much wealth he had, he could not – ride in a car, have any surgery, turn on a light, buy penicillin, hear a pipe organ, watch TV, wash dishes in running water, type a letter, mow a lawn, fly in an airplane, sleep on an innerspring mattress, talk on the phone, use the Internet, or twitter. Now that raises the question, “If he was rich, then what am I?”
Think about it the next time you think you are poor.
