A Heart-Wrenching Time

Bible Reading: Romans 8:26-39

Key Verse: Verse 26 - “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”

Key Words: Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities

We all experience trials. Some of these trials feel as though someone has stuck their fist inside our chest, grabbed our heart, and with a painful squeeze, twisted and turned our heart causing us to drop to our knees in agony.  Paul had this kind of heartache in mind when he said “groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26).

I believe Abraham also experienced this same type of heartache after Sarah passed away.  We read in Genesis 23:2b, “and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.”  This is also the same heartache David went through after Absalom’s death for we read in II Samuel 18:33, “And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept;; and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!”  Mary and Martha also went through a heart-wrenching experience when their brother, Lazarus, passed away.  When Jesus came from Jerusalem, Martha met Jesus and said, “Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died” (John 11:21).

Every one of us has been or will go through that trial which seems to change our lives forever.  Why do we have to go through such experiences as these?

First of all, these experiences come our way to reveal God’s love and power.  I Corinthians 10:13, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation, also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” God always gives us the grace and strength to go through our adversity and trial.  To God be the glory.

Secondly, we go through these times of heartache to try our faith.  James 1:3, “Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”

Thirdly, we go through these trials so that we can minister to others.  II Corinthians 1:4, “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted by God.”  Do not become so consumed with your heart-wrenching experience that all you do is focus on yourself but use it as a ministry to be a blessing to others.

Always remember, God is not doing something to you but allowing something for you.

What to do:

Pray for those going through times of sorrow.

Send them a note of encouragement.
