“The tabernacle of God is with men.” The ancient tabernacle in the wilderness
represented God's presence and glory in the midst of Israel (Leviticus
26:11-12; Ezekiel 37:17). All of the
rich meaning symbolized in the tabernacle of Israel was fulfilled in Jesus
Christ. The word translated “tabernacle”
is skene, which literally means “the place where God dwells.” This means that God will make His tabernacle
with His saints forever and ever; He will give His presence to them forever and
ever. “Behold the tabernacle (skene) of
God is with men, and He will tabernacle (skenosei) with them.” At once it becomes clear why He did not say
that the temple of God is with men. In
the eternal state we will not be engaged with a temple made with men’s hands
(see Acts 17:24), but with God Himself.
Not even the gorgeous and elaborate temple which Solomon built could
contain Him (II Chronicles 6:18).~
