The Greatest Liberty of All
We apologize for the missing blog for the 3rd of July.
It was in 1776 that the Liberty bell was rung for the first time. Fifty years later on July 4, 1926, it ushered in what was known as the Jubilee Anniversary of the American Republic. The bell, mow cracked, no longer tolls but it is still very much a symbol of our freedom.
No doubt our forefathers were well acquainted with the Bible so it is not surprising that they associated liberty with a bell. On the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would go alone into the Holy of Holies to offer a sacrifice for the nation of Israel. When he entered the tabernacle he had on a beautiful robe. At the bottom of that robe was a series of tiny bells as Exodus 28 states. As the priest moved inside the Holy of Holies the bells could be heard, but when it was time for the sacrifice to be made the High Priest would take off the robe. It could not be put on again until God accepted the sacrifice for sins. When the people would once again hear the bells there was great rejoicing, for they knew that God had accepted the sacrifice and their sins were forgiven.
Christ, our Great High Priest, also laid aside His garment of Glory and made atonement for us. As a result, the spiritual liberty bell of freedon can ring out anthems of joy for we are free, not because of our effort but because of Jesus. You too can be free today if you would but trust Jesus as your Saviour. "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32).
Praise the Lord for the freedom we have had in this great land for the last 250 years! Even greater is the freedom we have in Christ from the bondage of sin!
Thanks for reading!
