Introduction From The Battle For Your Soul, Part 1
With a God so good, why is life so hard?
Those of us who follow Jesus Christ have a book - the Bible - telling us everything we need to know. We have communities of faith, local churches, which Jesus inaugurated. We have the Holy Spirit living within us, and we have a glorious hope ahead of us.
So why do we mess up so easily and so often? Why do we wake up some mornings feeling like failures? With Jesus as our Savior, why do we seem more vulnerable to temptation than ever? Why do some marriages unravel? So many addictions deepen? So many churches argue? So many questions ovewhelm us?
How is it that I can feel jealous or you can feel proud or we can tumble into lust like a boulder bouncing down the hillside? Furthermore, doesn't it sometimes seem that Christians face more problems - not less - because of our faith? We encounter oppostition, endure hostility, and experience the kind of difficulties earlier generations called "trials and tribulations" and "afflictions and attacks of the devil." Why is that? It's because we are not drifting across a tranquil pond in a fishing boat; we are stationed on a battleship in the middle of a war.
There is a battle going on for your soul.
The Bible says "Our fight is not against any physical enemy: it is agianst the unseen power that controls the dark world, and spiritual agents from the very headquarters of evil." (Ephesians 6:12, Phillips).
As I write these words and you read them, weary soldiers are sheltering in trenches around the world. Combat pilots are sitting in cockpits. Drone operators are watching glowing screens in hidden command centers. Intelligence agencies are tracking threats most citizens never see. Parents are kneeling by their beds, praying for sons and daughters serving in dangerous places.
Yet another war is raging simultaneously - a spiritual conflict that doesn't show up in the headlines but touches every one of us every single day. The battle for your soul.
