What Will It Take to Stop You?
"If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small." - Proverbs 24:10
D.J. Moody and Ira Sankey had arrived in England for the first time. God had used their ministry greatly in America, but they had never administered in England where a different culture awaited them. Soon after they landed they found out that the expense money for the trip had not been sent, and the two pastor friends who had orininally invited them had both died. Sankey would later describe the situation: "It was anything but cheerful. Here we were in a strange country without an invitation, no committee, and mighty little cash." Moody, holding the letter, replied, "If the Lord opens a door, we'll go through. If not, we'll go back to America."
Moody was used to preaching to thousands in the States, but in Moody's first meeting in England, he would preach to only 50 people. Ira Sankey would describe in his autobiography that Moody did not show one sign of anxiety: "Less than fifty present! Thay took their seats as far away from the pulpit as possible! They would sing; they didn't take to the little organ, or the Yankee tunes."
But Moody was not a quitter. He was determined to preach the Gospel whether fifty or five thousand attended. And God blessed Mood's tenacity. Moody would continue his evangelistic campaign in England, and the British people would grow to love those American evangelists and espond to God's message.
Are you thinking about quitting because of some adversity in your life? Are you discouraged because the Christian life isn't what you expected? In your own strength you will wilt at everu obstacle, so let God be your strength. He will see you through the difficult times. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble" (Psalm 46:1).
