Bible Reading: Acts 6:1-7
Key Verse: Verse 2 – “Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.”
Key Words: and serve tables
The word service found in Acts 6:2 is the word deacon in I Timothy 3:8. It is very obvious that the word deacon means servant. The deacons are not in competition with the pastor and vice-versa, but rather the deacons are to be helpers and servants in the work of the church.
A Godly, supportive deacon is priceless, both to the church and to the pastor.
As you read about the deacons you see three primary truths. First of all, they are to be servants (Acts 6:2). Secondly, they are to have a Godly character; and so is their wife to be of Godly character. Thirdly, they are to be a soul-winner. (See Stephen as an example.) They are to have a good report (good testimony) among the membership, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom.
If your church has good Godly deacons, such as Mountain View does, you should praise God for them daily.
A pastor met with his deacons to discuss an important recommendation to the church. After a lively debate the deacons brought the issue to a vote. To the pastor’s surprise the raised hands indicated all but one deacon favored the recommendation. The pastor was so pleased with the balloting that he asked the one dissenting deacon if he would reconsider his vote so they could come to the business meeting with a unanimous agreement. The cantankerous deacon gruffly replied, “Pastor, as long as I am around, ain’t nothin’ gonna be unanimous.” What a legacy!
Thank you, Lord, for Godly, good, spiritual, serving deacons.
