Are You Over-Worked, Over-Regulated?

 Bible Reading: I Thessalonians 2:1-9

Key Verse: Verse 9 – “For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.”

Key Words: labouring night and day

No doubt Paul was a hard worker and put in numerous hours of labor for God.

In today’s world of the forty-hour work week, we tend to feel over-worked when we go over the forty-hour mark.

The following notice was found in the ruins of a London office building.  It was dated 1852.

  1. The firm is happy to announce that we have reduced the hours of work and the clerical staff will now only have to work from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM on week days.
  2. Clothing must be of a sober nature.  No one on staff will disport themselves in raiment of bright colors.
  3. A stove is now provided for the benefit of the staff.  Each staff member who chooses to use the stove for cooking or heating must bring four pounds of coal each day.
  4. No member of the clerical staff may leave the room without permission from their supervisor.
  5. No talking is allowed during business hours.
  6. The craving for tobacco, wine and spirits is a human weakness and not allowed by those employed here, either on or off the job.
  7. Now that the hours of business have been greatly reduced, the partaking of food is allowed between 11:30 and noon, but work will not on any account cease.
  8. Members of the clerical staff will provide their own pens and pencils.
  9. The supervisor will nominate a senior clerk to be responsible for the cleanliness of the office and private areas.  All boys and juniors will report to him forty minutes before prayers and will remain after closing hours for similar work.  Brushes, brooms, scrubbers, and soap are provided by the owner.
  10. The owners recognize the generosity of the new labor laws, but will expect a great rise in output of work to compensate for these near utopian conditions.

So, do you think you are over-worked and over-regulated?  Maybe not, huh!!

What to do:

Always give your best, no matter how long your work day may be.

thankful you are able to work.

Be thankful you have a job to go to.
